In the 1920's movies started to boom. There was an average of 80 million people per week that went to the movies. At that time there were about only 100-120 million people living in the U.S. The movies that came out in the beginning of the 1920's were all silent. Later into the 20's there were more movies that had sound. An exception to this was Charlie Chaplin. He still created many great videos that were still silent films.
Jazz Age
Jazz came into the U.S. mostly through black African Americans. By the early 1900's there were many jazz bands in New Orleans. Some Americans were horrified by Jazz. This was because they thought jazz wasn't real music. This is because jazz is a free style of playing music. Although some people didn't like jazz many people loved it. People loved to go out on Friday nights to dance the night away. Most of this night time music consisted of jazz music.
Harlem Renaissance
The city in New York by the name of Harlem was a place where Africans came to live. The Harlem grew from 50,000 in 1914 to 200,000 in 1930. This Became the home of African American literacy. A man by the name of James Weldon Johnson Became the leading writer of the Harlem group. He led the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) During this period team. Also he created a very famous piece of work. He created God's Trombones Which was a collection of sermons in rhythmic verse molded after the traditional black preaching.
